Through a franchise agreement with A. Hotels S.A, the existing Alexandra Barcelona Hotel on Carrer de Mallorca will convert to Alexandra Barcelona – a DoubleTree by Hilton in early 2014. The hotel will continue to be managed by hotel operator Diagonal Hotels, which operates a number of additional hotels in Barcelona. Well suited to its location in a city of architectural significance, the Alexandra has a classic Barcelona exterior and enjoys a stylish interior design. Its city centre location offers guests close proximity to many of the sites and cultural gems of a city boasting several UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Patrick Fitzgibbon, senior vice president development, Europe and Africa, Hilton Worldwide, said, “Tourism remains a major industry in Spain, the most visited of any EU country. Barcelona itself is one of the world’s great cities and attracts not only many leisure travelers but is also a significant business hub. We are delighted to be extending our presence with our first Barcelona DoubleTree by Hilton in such a prime location.”

The hotel currently offers 116 guest rooms, three meeting rooms, a restaurant and a fitness center. As part of the upgrade to the DoubleTree by Hilton brand, the hotel will be adding a complimentary 24 hour connectivity zone, as well as adding characteristic brand features such as the DoubleTree by Hilton signature chocolate chip cookie welcome, an array of upscale amenities and guest services, and the ability to earn and redeem points with the Hilton HHonors guest loyalty programme.

John Greenleaf, global head, DoubleTree by Hilton, said, “DoubleTree by Hilton’s growth in Spain continues at a rapid pace and I am thrilled we’ll have a presence in such a vibrant, world class destination as Barcelona. We very much look forward to providing visitors a warm welcome to what will be an exceptional property in our growing collection.”

Javier Julia, joint managing director of A. Hotels S.A., alongside Carolina Borrell, said, “The Alexandra is a beautiful hotel with a super city centre location and we are delighted it will become the first DoubleTree by Hilton in the city of Barcelona. We’d like to thank Magmatri Hospitality Consulting for acting as advisors to A. Hotels S.A. in signing the franchise agreement.”

Hilton Worldwide has experienced strong growth in Spain recently, with recent openings including DoubleTree by Hilton & Spa Emporda, DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel & Conference Center La Mola and Hilton Garden Inn Sevilla. The additional DoubleTree by Hilton in Spain will be the DoubleTree by Hilton Girona, which converts later this year. In Barcelona itself the company operates Hilton Diagonal Mar Barcelona and Hilton Barcelona, the latter undergoing a major renovation only recently.
