Tourism in London continues to boom

How will the Brexit affect tourism? London’s hotel industry keeps on booming. The depreciation of the Pound makes hotels, restaurants and shopping cheaper for guests from abroad. It is not yet clear if Britain’s exit will actually lead to losses in Tourism. Therefore, the hospitality industry UK chooses for new investments. A new record value was reached in London’s tourism last year, counting 31.5 million visitors. Therewith, the British capital maintains its position as one of the most visited major cities in the world.

There are currently 69 hotels emerging, only in London. The most recent opening was the Citizen M near the tower. This 370 room hotel is the second one of the smart, Dutch hotel chain, which is deemed as disruptive and targets the contemporary needs of generation Y. Citizen M focuses on newest technology like automatic check-in processes via smartphone or a modern Vitra-design in lobby and rooms. One new feature is the shop concept “Collection M”, which will be tested in the new flagship hotel.

Hungary’s tourism still has lots of potential – New Ritz-Carlton in Budapest will be a landmark

Budapest/Hungary, 19th May 2016 – Hungary still has lots of potential in tourism, in the larger cities as well as in traditional holiday areas such as Lake Balaton. During the past five years the spending of visitors increased by more than five billion euros. Although new hotel rooms can be placed on the market very well, the investments are currently restrained. One of the projects will be a new budget brand hotel Meininger in Budapest with 184 rooms; opening is scheduled for spring 2018. At the airport of Budapest a new airport hotel (200 rooms, opening: early 2017) will arise and Carlson Rezidor is investing in a new Park Inn Hotel in Zalakaros in the South of Balaton (236 rooms, opening in spring 2018).

But the potential for new hotels is significantly higher. Analysts at Horwath HTL estimated that Budapest itself will be in the need of more than 1,000 new rooms until 2019. Other forecasts are even higher. The hotel stock in the capital will grow by five to ten percent, they say.

A new hotel landmark is the recently opened Ritz Carlton in Budapest: This luxury hotel with 170 comfortable rooms and 30 elegant suites is located in a historic building in a prime, central location.

A new high-speed rail network will drive to the winter sports center Chongli in the Hebei province in the North West of the capital. Spectators, athletes and journalists can then arrive in only 50 minutes. By car it takes three to four hours for the 200-kilometer stretch. In Chongli in the mountains new courses and lifts as well as snow cannons are required. Also several hotels are needed. Currently a 200-room hotel by the Starwood hotel brand Element is planned to open in autumn 2017.

19 new properties with 3,800 rooms are currently being built in Beijing, among them several luxury hotels such as a Bulgari Hotel (120 rooms) and two properties by Mandarin Oriental Hotels (74 and 241 rooms).

Sofia, Bulgaria – 29 July 2015 – Lots of sun, fine sandy beaches on the Black Sea and safe snow layers in the mountains: Bulgaria sets heavily on the development of tourism and wants to win especially overnight guests from Western Europe. By 2020 the number of tourists is about to increase by around ten million per year. Therefore new hotels are in the pipeline. In the capital Sofia, a new Swissotel with 281 rooms, serviced apartments and a private eye clinic is being built. The complex is scheduled to open in 2018. Set on the popular Black Sea coast a 600 room resort of the TUI hotel brand Riu will open this summer. The holiday hotel offers among others a water park for children, swimming pools and restaurants as well as playgrounds and sports fields. In the city Plovic, which will be European Capital of Culture in 2019, a new Holiday Inn hotel with 68 rooms is being built; opening is scheduled for this year’s autumn.

Tourism in Bulgaria urgently needs new impetus. The number of affluent overnight guests recently decreased to around 4.5 million as previous tourism crowds from the Ukraine and Russia failed to materialize as a result of the Crimean crisis. In the past year about 510 million Euros were generated by the tourism industry. Currently Bulgaria supplies 3,162 hotels and resorts with a total of 314,000 beds.

In addition to the current focus on summer travellers and winter sports guests also the culture and wellness tourism should be promoted in the future. Therefore the Ministry of Tourism recently founded two transnational tours – “Towards the wine” and “Towards the Roman emperors” – which will lead from Bulgaria to Romania, Serbia and Croatia.

For hotel and tourism investors so-called One-Stop-Shop card were developed, which will identifies worthwhile destinations. So ski resorts will be built and lifts will be extended. For the spa tourism historic baths with mineral springs, which occur all over in Bulgaria, will be offered. Also an amusement park, which will popularly display the rich history of European country, is under construction.

With 90.7 million residents Vietnam is the third densely populated country in Southeast Asia, behind Indonesia and the Philippines, and surprises with a strong economic growth by six percent in the past year. A similar expansion rate is also expected for this year. The tourism is about to increase its revenue from 10.9 billion US Dollars in 2014 to 12.7 billion US Dollars in 2015. The tourism office is aiming about 8.4 million international visits in 2015 (previous year: 7.9 million). Therefore the infrastructure will be extended in popular holiday destinations such as the Phu Quoc Island.

Tourism boom also in Myanmar
Also Myanmar tries to obtain revenue through tourism. After doubling its number of international visitors in 2013, this number increased up to the million in 2014. As the construction of the new major airport Hanthawaddy is delayed, the Yangon International Airport will be expanded until late 2015. According to TOPHOTELPROJECTS currently 14 top hotels, brands such as Shangri-La, Dusit, Pullman (Accor), Hilton and Best Western, are in the pipeline.

In 2013 the hotel portfolio increased from 787 to 923 hotels with 34,834 rooms. The greatest part is located in Yangon (232 hotels with 10,175 rooms) followed by Mandalay (104 hotels), Bagan (77) and the capital Nay Pyi Taw (50) and Taunggyi/Inke Lake (70). The ministry recently calculated a stock of 1,000 hotels with about 10,000 new rooms.

Yangon remains the most popular destination. The occupancy rate at luxury hotels reached greatly 80 percent in 2013. In 2009 it was only at 46 percent. The room rate increased by almost 300 percent from 40 US Dollars to 157 US Dollars in average. The largest hotel is the Sule Shangi-La (former Traders) with 484 rooms as well as the hotels Sedona (450 rooms), Park Royal (359), Chatrium (315), Summit Parkview (250), Inya Lake (239) and Golden Hill (212).

Another strong economic growth by seven percent is recorded in Cambodia. Similar increases are expected for this and the next year. More and more manufacturing sites (focus of clothing) are relocated from China and Vietnam to Cambodia. With a growth of the visitor flow by 17.5 percent up to 4.2 million foreign guests, the tourism revives the demand of customer good as well as the hospitality and gastronomy. The 200-room Andaz Ottawa Byward Market will be located at 325 Dalhousie Street in Ottawa’s famed Byward Market neighborhood. The neighborhood is surrounded by more than two dozen embassies and consulates and is located immediately east of Ottawa’s commercial office core, a short walk from Parliament Hill, and just north of the University of Ottawa campus.
