Rezidor signs 11 hotels with 2,200 rooms and further strengthens pipeline in key focus countries like Saudi Arabia and Turkey

Brussels, Belgium – 17 July 2014 – The Rezidor Hotel Group, one of the most dynamic hotel companies worldwide and a member of the Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group, has signed 11 new projects with almost 2,200 rooms in the second quarter of 2014. All new rooms were under fee-based contracts – supporting Rezidor’s asset-light, profitable and sustainable growth strategy in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Radisson Blu Beach Resort Crete MilatosFour signings represented upcoming hotels in Saudi Arabia, and two signings were related to Turkey – both key focus countries for Rezidor. “Due to its fast economic growth and ambitious public spending initiatives, Saudi Arabia is a powerhouse in the Middle East. We have accelerated our development in the Kingdom together with strong regional partners, and are actively seeking further growth opportunities”, commented Wolfgang M. Neumann, President & CEO of Rezidor. “In Turkey, a hub between Europe and Asia, our network is equally expanding. In the mega-market Istanbul, Radisson Blu is now featuring seven hotels and 1,500 rooms and is the largest upper-upscale brand in town”, added Neumann.

In the second quarter of 2014 Rezidor opened five hotels with almost 800 rooms – among them one of Norway’s first dual-branded properties, the Radisson Blu and Park Inn by Radisson Hotel Oslo Alna. The other openings were the Radisson Blu Hotel Dhahran, Saudi Arabia; the Radisson Blu Mammy Yoko Hotel Freetown, Sierra Leone; and the Radisson Resort & Spa Zavidovo, Russia. “Also our openings underline our focus on selected key countries and the emerging markets of Africa and Russia/CIS where huge natural resources, improving infrastructure, changing demographics and increasing demand offer considerable growth potential”, said Elie Younes, Senior Vice President & Head of Group Development of Rezidor.

In the mature markets of Western Europe and the Nordics, Rezidor continued its accelerated asset management and concluded three deals in Q2 2014. The lease agreement for a key hotel in Western Europe was restructured and will result in a € 300,000 increase of Rezidor’s annual EBITDA. In Norway, the group negotiated a 20 years extension of the management agreement for the 676 rooms flagship Radisson Blu Plaza Hotel, Oslo – one of the highest fee generating properties in Rezidor’s portfolio. Also the lease contract for the Radisson Blu Hotel, Ålesund was extended by 20 years.

“Such results show our continued success in upgrading our leased hotels and improving their financial performance – a core element of our Route 2015 turnaround programme”, said Wolfgang M. Neumann. Through Route 2015, Rezidor aims to reach an EBITDA margin increase of 6-8% by the year 2015. In 2013, the EBITDA margin grew by 3.3 percentage points to 8.8% and was above target. Besides dedicated asset management projects, Route 2015 comprises Revenue Generation activities, a focus on fee based growth, and cost savings.

Nobu Hotel Riyadh will mark Middle East Debut with Distinctive Design Concept – Bringing Together Japanese Craftsmanship with Splendor of Arabian Landscapes

Madrid, Spain  – 16 July 2014 – Rockwell Group Europe and Dhaliliyah Est. are nearing completion of the interior of the Nobu Hotel Riyadh, the first Nobu Hotel in the Middle East and the first luxury boutique hotel in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Opening in the first quarter of 2015, the hotel will be located in a modern, 23-story skyscraper on renowned King Fahd Road in the heart of the city’s financial center, close to major cultural and shopping destinations. It will be distinguished for a contemporary design that artfully blends Nobu’s cutting-edge Japanese style with subtle and poetic references to the magical landscapes of the Arabian Peninsula.

In addition to the hotel’s 90 guestrooms and 44 suites, Rockwell Group Europe is designing all of the hotel’s public spaces, including a teahouse on the ground floor, an all-day dining restaurant on the first floor mezzanine, a VIP Lounge with sweeping views of the city from the sixteenth floor, banquet facilities and meeting rooms, and the hotel’s in-house, 770m2 signature Nobu Restaurant. The project reflects the collaborative design vision of Rockwell Group Europe and Dhaliliyah Est., and builds on many years of experience with Nobu Hospitality, a partnership with acclaimed chef Nobu Matsuhisa, actor Robert de Niro, and film producer Meir Teper.

“The design of Nobu Hotel Riyadh is a progression of various concepts that Rockwell Group has developed with Nobu in the past, emphasizing natural materials and craftsmanship and visually connecting different spaces to create a fluid environment and experience,” says Diego Gronda, Managing and Creative Director of Rockwell Group Europe, who also worked on the design of the flagship Nobu Fifty Seven restaurant in New York, which opened in 2005. “We’re building on the distinctive Nobu aesthetic while anchoring the hotel in its specific Saudi-Arabian context, which was accomplished by weaving together abstract references to Japanese and Saudi cultural and natural elements and setting up these dynamic design dualities.”

Rockwell Group Europe’s approach combines contemporary design and manufacture with Japan’s artisanal traditions, featuring raw materials like wood and stone, warm earth colors, and custom lighting features inspired by origami. A porte-cochère made of a double-height rectangular wood frame, wrapped in natural fiber rope, will mark the hotel’s entrance, creating a sense of warmth and intrigue upon guests’ arrival. In the double-height entrance hall, visitors will be greeted by a sensuous ribbon of stacked horizontal wood slats, about five meters wide, inspired in shape and structure by the binzasara, a traditional Japanese percussion instrument. This custom wood feature will curve up the wall and along the ceiling and floor of the hotel’s ground floor in one continuous, flowing gesture, guiding visitors from the front door to the reception, elevators, and other areas. It will also arch upward to the all-day dining restaurant on the mezzanine and along the restaurant’s ceiling. Special fiber optic rope will tie together the wood slats at both ends and give a festive light.

In the entrance hall, guests will further encounter a large glass disc by Venezuelan artist Manuel Mérida, one of a series of commissioned artworks placed throughout the hotel. The kinetic disc is about three meters in diameter and holds tiny, sand-like loose grains. Rotating slowly, it plays with the notion of a sandstorm as the grains collapse into ever changing formations. The reception desk will consist of a massive, horizontal floating glass case that is supported only by a stone column. Special installations inspired by organic sand patterns shaped by desert winds will be displayed in the vitrine.

The 770m2 signature Nobu Restaurant on the second floor will be accessed through a wooden pathway framed by two large Japanese gardens. Rockwell Group Europe has designed a large, sculptural light fixture for the restaurant’s Tea and Juice Bar—finished in natural coconut fiber and evoking a luminous piece of twisted rope. An undulating wooden fish scale structure, manufactured by Brad Oldham International, will envelop the entire space while defining different dining areas and providing a sense of intimacy and human scale. Made out of hand-size, hexagon pieces of wood, held together by metal brackets, this double-curvature membrane will be punctured along the window façade by small triangular apertures, to let in natural light. It will create a warm environment contrasting with the restaurant’s highly polished stone floor. Comfortable banquettes with patterned textiles, designed by Rockwell Group for Jim Thompson, will add to the restaurant’s welcoming and vibrant feel. Guests may sit at the sushi bar facing the show kitchen or opt for a quieter dining experience offered by two private dining rooms seating 16 to 20 people each.

The hotel’s guestrooms and suites are designed as oases of tranquility and rejuvenation, a concept that will be underscored by nature-inspired, organic shapes and patterns and pastel colors with accents of gold. Eclectic furniture will mix classic, modern, and contemporary shapes, while several live edge pieces will add a touch of Japanese craftsmanship. The sumptuous 230m2 Royal Suite will boast a dining area with a natural root table for six people and a show kitchen where chefs will prepare food to order from the Nobu restaurant.

Hotels want to aim higher: new hotel skyscraper in the pipeline worldwide – J Hotel in Shanghai should become largest hotel tower worldwide

Hamburg, Germany – 12 June 2013 – Tophotels are aiming higher: new hotel skyscrapers are under construction worldwide. At the end of 2014 the J Hotel in Shanghai will open its doors – with 632 meters and 128 floors it will be the largest hotel in the world. So far the Royal Clock Tower hotel in Mecca in Saudi Arabia (601 meters) is entitled being the highest hotel so far. TOPHOTELPROJECTS (www.tophotelprojects.com), the worldwide leading provider of global b2b hotel data, has summarized the most ambitious hotel construction projects.

The J Hotel Tower in Shanghai will not be just a hotel – only 26 floors (84th till the 110th level) are provided for it. So far it is not sure if they can obtain the record for the “world’s highest hotel”. For comparison: the Armani Hotel in the world’s highest Tower, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai (828 meters) occupies the 1st till the 8th floor as well as the 28th till the 39th floor with 160 rooms – and is thereof on the first place of the highest buildings with a hotel. On second place is the Park Hyatt (174 rooms) which occupies the 79th till the 93rd floor in the Shanghai World Financial Center (492 meters). The Ritz Carlton at the International Commerce Centre in Hong Kong ranked on the third place at the list of the highest buildings which include a hotel.

The J Hotel offers 258 rooms and will be operated by Jin Jiang Hotels. The lobby is at the 101th floor and offers an impressive panorama view over the Pudong district.

Another superlative hotel tower is planned to open in 2016 in the capital of Kazakhstan, Astana. The Abu Dhabi Plaza (382 meters) should comprise two hotels on an area of 12,000 square meters. Investor of the 1.5 billion US-Dollar major project is among others the government of Abu Dhabi. In 2017 the World Expo will take place in Astana.

Also in Baku, Azerbaijan’s capital, a record tower building will be built. On the Khazar islands at the Caspian Sea the “Business Center” skyscraper should become the world’s highest skyscraper with 1,050 meter – including two hotels. The construction work for the 100 billion US-Dollar projects of the Avesta Group has started. The completion is planned for 2022. On YouTube you can watch the promo of the vision: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uy2yE3fEsYk

Saudi Prince and hotel investor Al-Walid continues to pursue his plans to arise the “Kingdom Tower” in Jeddah in Saudi Arabia – with almost a high of 1,000 meters, it will be the highest tower in the world by far. A Four Seasons Hotel will be included. Still it is unclear when the construction of the approximately 1.2 billion US-Dollar expensive project will start.
